Technology. Isn’t it wonderful? We can have a webinar or even a hybrid event where stakeholders from around the world can watch and interact in real time! A generation ago, you could barely afford a day-time call across the ocean due to long-distance phone rates and today, we can use various platforms and talk for the price of our internet connection!
What tech do I need to start doing webinars?
The image to the right is a more advanced setup up. Don’t let all the bells and whistles freak you out. If you have-
- a ‘modern’ laptop (PC/Mac does not matter!)
- or- tablet or phone with
- an integrated web cam
- an integrated microphone
- speakers (integrated or not)
- solid internet connection
- and requisite software installed
You’re pretty much at the minimum level to start.
Tech to avoid..
If you’re going to do virtual summits, digital interviews, webinars and such, you really need a wired connection. So avoid wireless! You need to be wired. Also avoid using any USB extension (even if USB-3) for extended devices (unless you’ve tested it!). Most of you know your ISP and how dependable your connections are. Use that as a gauge. You may need to find a different location to “broadcast” from.
What do I buy and what do I need to know?
Our favorite consulting answer: “It depends”. What are you trying to accomplish? Let’s say in every session you’ll interview two guests. Will they be on their equipment on zoom, Google Meets, or other webinar platform? Or are you interviewing local guests that can come to your studio? Or is it just going to be you?
If your studio, is it treated for sound abatement?
How many webcams and microphones will you need? How will you mix them? What is your staffing like? And more…
Do you have the skills to mix down and edit video and audio? And more…
No one perfect answer
Like most things in life, there is not one “it covers it all” answer. “It depends” is as good as it gets, unfortunately. Starting now with a conversation is the best way for us to help determine how to help you! we’re happy to discuss all your hardware and software and setup solutions!
